Towards the end of 2021 Birmingham City Council published a tender for someone to help them leverage the benefits from the city hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022 to support their local food and drink supply chain to engage with international commonwealth markets.
The BCA were keen to respond to this tender having engaged directly and indirectly in commonwealth trade support and promotion and, more recently, with the Food Foundation, who’s vision is a sustainable food system which delivers health and wellbeing for all.
The BCA led bid supported by partners the Food Foundation, Greater Birmingham Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce, the GBSLEP/Growth Hub, the African Business Chamber, Aston and Birmingham City Universities, Cleone Foods Ltd, the Director of Public Health, Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Consular Assoc, was successful. It is now for the partnership to organise the development and delivery of an SME trade and business event which will bring together and facilitate the cooperation of Commonwealth SME supply chain businesses in the food and drink sector during or in the run up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Taking place from 28 July to 8 August, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase the city on a global stage. As well as delivering a compelling international sporting spectacle the Games provide an opportunity to improve the lives of local people by generating business, delivering much-needed regeneration, being bold by promoting the city on the global stage and bringing our communities together. The Commonwealth Games legacy should benefit the host city as well as participating nations. The Games itself present an opportunity for host cities to strengthen their links with Commonwealth cities.
