BCA Education Focus Group University Student Debate

Two teams of students, one from BCU and the other UoB gave the judges a tough decision at the BCA’s annual university student debate held at BCU on the evening of 21st November 2023, the motion being:

“The Commonwealth is a compelling force for good and an effective network for cooperation and for promoting development”

Each team, comprising of 3 members, put forward a very thought provoking well researched argument either for the motion, in the case of BCU or against the motion in the case of UoB.

The judges were looking for the most convincing team in their reasoning and evidence, be it for or against the motion, having listened to their main arguments, reasons for supporting or opposing the motion as applicable, the use of cross examination of each other, presentation style including pace, conviction, clarity, keeping the audience’s attention as well as using their allocated time effectively. Based upon the required criteria, they unanimously decided that the team most effective at arguing their position was the University of Birmingham.

Announcing the judge’s decision, the Chairman, Keith Stokes-Smith, congratulated both teams on their submissions and thanked the other two judges, Shariff Rashida and Nick Reed for their contribution. He then presented the ‘University Student Annual Commonwealth Debate’ shield to the winning team together with a certificate to each team member.

Well done to both teams.
